The Assessment Process

At UK Dyslexia, we understand that every individual’s learning journey is unique, whether you are seeking an assessment for a child, teenager, or adult. Our goal is to make the process clear, supportive, and stress free from start to finish.

1. Initial Conversation

You'll be offered a no obligation phone call to discuss your concerns and explore whether a diagnostic assessment is the right next step. This is a chance to ask questions and understand what’s involved.

2. Booking Your Assessment

If you decide to go ahead, you’ll receive:

  • A proposed appointment date

  • Our terms and conditions

  • Instructions for paying a deposit to secure your booking

3. Preparing for the Assessment

To help us build a full picture of your (or your child’s) learning profile, we’ll ask you to complete:

  • A background questionnaire

  • A school questionnaire (for children and young people in education)

We also ask that you confirm that a recent eye test and hearing test (within the past 18 months) has been completed.

Please return all completed forms at least 5 days before the assessment.

4. Payment

The remaining balance is due at least 48 hours before the assessment date.

5. On the Day

The assessment session lasts around 3 hours and can take place in person at an agreed location or remotely, depending on what suits you best.

You (or your child) will be guided through a range of tasks that explore areas such as:

  • Working memory

  • Processing speed

  • Phonological awareness

  • Literacy and related skills

We know that formal assessments can feel overwhelming, especially for those who’ve struggled with learning. Please be reassured:
🔹 There is no pass or fail
🔹 We are simply building a clear picture of how you learn best
🔹 Breaks are provided as needed, and the pace is always tailored to the individual

6. Your Report

You’ll receive a detailed written report (usually within 2 weeks), which includes:

  • Whether the criteria for a diagnosis of dyslexia have been met

  • A clear summary of findings

  • Personalised recommendations for support, in education, the workplace, or daily life

The report is yours to keep, and we recommend storing a secure copy for future use (e.g. in education, work, or support applications).

7. Follow-Up Support

If you'd like to talk through the report, we’re happy to arrange a follow-up call to answer questions and discuss next steps.
